Young people against extremism and radicalization.

Giovani contro estremismo e radicalizzione.

"RESISTANCE" è stato un progetto Erasmus+ realizzato in due scambi internazionali di giovani con l'obiettivo di riunire giovani provenienti da 5 paesi Europei e, nello specifico, provenienti da organizzazioni pubbliche e private di Italia, Grecia, Spagna, Polonia e Bulgaria.

Il progetto è statosupportato dall’Agenzia Nazionale per i Giovani nell’ambito del programma Europeo Erasmus Plus, con il patrocinio del Comune di Lecce, il Comune di Specchia, il Polo Bibliomuseale di Lecce della Regione Puglia e in collaborazione con Action Aid Lecce

Il progetto si è sostanziato di due mobilità internazionali, e abbiamo coinvolto 80 giovani partecipanti (40 partecipanti per ciascuna mobilità).

- Scambio di giovani "The power of Media Literacy" - Specchia (LE) dal 20 al 28 ottobre 2019.

- Scambio di giovani "The power of Sport" - Lecce dal 20 al 27 febbraio 2020.

GLI OBIETTIVI

Gli obiettivi del progetto sono stati:

- esplorare il concetto di radicalizzazione e estremismo tra i giovani;

- esplorare le cause profonde della radicalizzazione e dell'estremismo;

- analizzare la situazione attuale e i rischi che affrontano i giovani, in particolare i giovani tra rifugiati / richiedenti asilo e migranti

- esplorare i comuni valori europei di tolleranza, pluralismo, non discriminazione, giustizia, solidarietà. e democrazia;

- fornire opportunità per condividere buone pratiche nel combattere l'estremismo e la radicalizzazione;

- raccogliere intuizioni, apprendimento, ispirazioni ed esperienza dei partecipanti nelle loro comunità locali e tradurle in idee di progetto concrete;

- sviluppare azioni concrete da applicare localmente;

- trasferire conoscenze e abilità attraverso lo sviluppo e la pubblicazione online di una guida utile a prevenire e combattere radicalizzazione ed estremismo.

LE ATTIVITÀ

Gli argomenti affrontati durante le due mobilità sono stati:

- Come analizzare la situazione attuale e i rischi che i giovani devono affrontare oggi in una società che si pone sempre più in linea con correnti sovraniste ed estremiste;

- come esplorare gli strumenti utilizzati per diffondere la radicalizzazione dei giovani, comprenderli e immaginare strategie per sovvertire lo stato delle cose;

- come fornire opportunità di condivisione di buone pratiche nel prevenire l'estremismo e la radicalizzazione;

- come creare un raccoglitore di intuizioni, apprendimento, ispirazioni ed esperienza dei partecipanti e dalle loro comunità locali;

Abbiamo sfidato e stimolato i partecipanti a mostrare i loro talenti e la loro creatività per la creazione di strumenti e strategie per combattere e prevenire i fenomeni di radicalizzazione; abbiamo altresì tenuto un "diario digitale", che alla fine dello scambio abbiamo poi condiviso tutti insieme mostrando come molti punti di vista siano cambiati durante lo scambio. Un momento di riflessione è stato dedicato a capire i nostri limiti e capire come superarli.

Durante la prima mobilità "The power of media literacy", dopo aver compreso approfonditamente i rischi della radicalizzazione, abbiamo indagato il mondo dei social network/media, le strategie dei gruppi estremisti per cercare di diffondersi nella società. Siamo partiti da ciò per un'azione di digital guerrilla; abbiamo collaborato per la creazione di una campagna di comunicazione e sensibilizzazione promossa a mezzo social che è stata una contro-narrazione ai messaggi diffusi dai gruppi estremisti.

Durante la seconda mobilità "The power of sport" abbiamo lavorato sulla prevenzione e sulla raccolta e riordino di buone pratiche così da fornire materiale agli youth worker europei con cui abbiamo condiviso i risultati del nostro progetto. Durante il secondo scambio, SEYF ha supportato la disseminazione dei risultati della campagna di comunicazione, insieme alla promozione della mostra fotografica “Through Our Eyes” realizzata dalla ONG Still I rise in collaborazione esclusiva con Action Aid Lecce. La mostra non ha porta scatti di adulti verso i bambini, bensì istantanee tra coetanei. Nelle foto esposte in mostra si scorgevano le difficoltà che i ragazzi e le ragazze dai 12 ai 17 anni si trovano a dover fronteggiare ogni giorno nell’Hotspot di Samos.
La mostra è stata attiva a Lecce dal 24 febbraio al 7 marzo 2020 presso le sale adiacenti la biblioteca interculturale dell’ex convitto Palmieri (Piazzetta G. Carducci) ed è stata di supporto alle attività e ai contenuti promossi dal progetto Resistance.

Coinvolgendo i giovani partecipanti così come giovani locali provenienti da situazioni di svantaggio economico e sociale, abbiamo dato il via ad una programmazione di contest sportivi attraverso cui, grazie al lavoro del team di animazione internazionale oltre che dello staff di SEYF hanno sviluppato e sperimentato i valori della solidarietà e della condivisione, e soprattutto l’importanza di appartenere ad una squadra, indipendentemente dal background culturale, religioso o sociale dei suoi membri.

LE METODOLOGIE

Le metodologie utilizzate rientrano tutte nell'universo della non formal learning e dell'outdoor education e si sono sostanziate in:

- Presentazioni e discussioni sulle pratiche di diffusione di news e fake news attraverso i social media;

- brainstorming;

- attività individuali e di gruppo indoor e outdoor create e preparate insieme;

- workshop creati e preparati insieme;

- sessioni di team building indoor e outdoor;

- riflessione individuale e di gruppo anche attraverso i "diari digitali" che abbiamo compilato durante le attività;

- working group per la creazione di campagne;

- contest sportivi.

Con il metodo del learning by doing abbiamo incoraggiato i partecipanti ad adottare un atteggiamento proattivo durante le attività, e di conseguenza verso le loro vite.

I RISULTATI:

Attraverso RESISTANCE è stato possibile produrre un impatto positivo che si articola secondo i seguenti aspetti:

1. tutti i partecipanti hanno beneficiato di una formazione non formale simile e hanno avuto un nucleo di competenze e competenze che hanno permesso il completamento del loro percorso individuale come changemakers;

2. i metodi di apprendimento e contenuti sono stati raccolti e analizzati al fine di identificare le migliori pratiche seguite e i migliori metodi da utilizzare che possono essere replicabili;

3. grazie al progetto, è stato possibile sviluppare un più forte senso di comunità, offrendo ai giovani opportunità di mobilità e un contesto per il dialogo e il networking che potrebbe essere un motore per collaborazioni future;

4. è stato posto un accento forte sulla disseminazione dei valori europei alla base del dialogo interculturale, della tolleranza e del rispetto dell'altro;

5. l'inclusione nel programma di mobilità deii giovani svantaggiati, dei migranti e dei richiedenti asilo ha permesso di enfatizzare i risultati di progetto in quanto ha offerto una reale percezione di una concreta e possibile azione di inclusione.

"RESISTANCE" has been an Erasmus + project carried out in two international youth exchanges with the aim of bringing together young people from 5 European countries to empower them to combat extremism and radicalization. Specifically, people came from public and private organizations from Italy, Greece, Spain, Poland and Bulgaria.

The project has been cofinanced by the Italian National Agency for Youth with the patronage of the City of Lecce (LE), the Municipality of Specchia (LE), the Apulia Region (Polo biblio-museale di Lecce) and in cooperation with Action Aid Lecce.

The project consisted of two international mobilities:

- the youth exchange "The power of Media Literacy" held in Specchia (LE) from 20th to 28th October 2019.

- the youth exchange "The power of Sport" held in Lecce (LE) from 20th to 27th February 2020.

We involved a total of 80 young people (40 participant per mobility).

AIMS & OBJECTIVES:

The aims of of the project were to:

- Explore the concept of radicalization and extremism among youth;

- Explore the root causes for radicalization and extremism;

- Analyze the current situation and risks facing young people today, particularly young people among refugees/asylum seekers and migrants;

- Explore common European Values of tolerance, pluralism, non-discrimination, justice, solidarity and democracy and how youth can embrace and promote them in their local communities.

- Provide opportunities to share good practices in fighting extremism and radicalization;

- Gather insights, learning, inspirations and experience of participants from their local communities and translate them into concrete project ideas;

- Develop concrete action to be applied locally;

- Transfer knowledge and skills through developing and publishing online a small e guide for fight the radicalization.

THE ACTIVITIES:

The topics addressed during the two activities were:

- How to analyze the current situation and the risks that young people are face today in a society that is increasingly in line with sovereign and extremist currents;

- how to explore the tools used to spread the radicalization of young people, understand them and imagine strategies to change the state of things;- how to provide opportunities for sharing good practices in preventing extremism and radicalization;

- how to create a collector of insights, learning, inspiration and experience of the participants and from their local communities;

We provided the young participants with a challenge to show their talents and their creativity for the creation of tools and strategies useful combat and prevent radicalization phenomena; we kept a "digital diary", which we shared all together at the end of the exchange so to show how many points of view have changed during the project. A moment of reflection has been dedicated to understand our limits and to understand how to overcome them.

During the first mobility "The power of media literacy", after having thoroughly understood the risks of radicalization, we investigated the world of social networks, the strategies used by extremist groups for spreading hate among social communities and societies.
We started from this stage for setting up a digital guerrilla action; we collaborated for the creation of a social communication campaign based on social networks that is acting s as a counter narrative to the messages spread by extremist groups.

During the second mobility "The power of sport" we focused on prevention and on the collection and reorganization of good practices in order to provide EU youth workers with useful material. By involving the young participants as well as local young people coming from situations of economic and social disadvantage, we started a program of sports contests through which, thanks to the work of the international animation team as well as the SEYF staff, they have been able to develop and experiment the values of solidarity and sharing, and above all the importance of belonging to a team, regardless of the cultural, religious or social background of its members.

During the youth exchange "The power of Sport" we disseminated the results of the campaign and promoted the photographic exhibition "Through Our Eyes" created by the NGO “Still I rise” in exclusive collaboration with ActionAid Lecce. The photos showed the difficulties that boys and girls aged 12 to 17 may face every day in the Greek Samos Hotspot. The exhibition has been promoted in Lecce the rooms close to the intercultural library of the “ex Convitto Palmieri” building (Piazzetta G. Carducci and and integrated the activities and the content promoted by the Erasmus+ project Resistance.

THE METHODOLOGIES:

The methodologies that be used can all fall within the universe of non-formal learning and outdoor education and included:

- Presentations and discussions on the diffusion of news and fake news through social media;

- brainstorming;

- individual and group indoor and outdoor activities created and prepared together,

- workshops created and prepared together;

- indoor and outdoor team building sessions;

- individual and group reflection also through the "digital diaries" that we will compile during the activities;

- working groups for creating campaigns;

- sports contests.

With the learning by doing method we encouraged the participants to adopt a proactive attitude during the activities, and consequently towards their lives.

THE RESULTS:

Through RESISTANCE it has been possible to produce a positive impact analyzed through the following aspects:

1. all participants benefited from a similar non-formal training and received a package of skills and competences that is allowing the completion of their individual path as changemakers;

2. the learning methods and contents has been collected and analyzed in order to identify the best practices followed and the best methods to be used that are now being replicated;

3. a stronger sense of community has been developed, through the project, by offering young people opportunities for mobility and a context for dialogue and networking that is helping promoters to develop future collaborations;

4. the dissemination of European values at the basis of intercultural dialogue, tolerance and respect for others has been amplified;

5. the inclusion in the mobility program of disadvantaged young people, migrants and asylum seekers amplified the project results as it gave a real perception of a concrete and possible inclusion action.
